A good neighborhood is gold. This client came to us deeply committed to their tight-knit community, but desperate for more space for their family. With both parents working from home plus 2 kids, the 4 room 800 square foot home was limiting. We explored several options to find a solution that met the specific needs and priorities of this family. The result was a customized approach that expanded the functionality of their home and brought more ease and joy to the everyday happenings.
Intimately working with the priorities of the client, we were strategic about how we approached the project. We tore off the roof and added a full second story, minimizing the scope on the first floor while having maximum impact on the function of the house. The second floor added 3 bedrooms and a family bathroom/laundry. We freed up space on the first floor for a private workspace and studio/flex space for the family. We added a built-in to the dining area and widened the opening between dining and living room to play up the layered views through the relatively small house footprint.
This family has always been a hub with neighbors and extended family popping in and out. Transforming the first floor into spaces that are more public and shared while moving private sleeping spaces to the new second floor has shifted the flow of activity in the home. By committing to listen closely to the needs of our client, we were able to deliver a project full of intention and personality.
